Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation (BMC) is going to install rooftop solar plants for to generate energy from its premises. These plants will be grid interactive for lighting streets and other areas. The total cost of the solar power project is around INR 20 Crore. Of this INR 15 Crore would be spent on rooftop solar power plants system and the rest on street lights, lights in parks and high mast light on traffic junctions among other areas.

Bihar Renewable Energy Development Agency (BREDA) will provide assistance for installing grid-interactive rooftop solar plants. Bhagalpur Smart City Limited (BSCL) will look after the installation of solar street lightings.

The municipal corporation will install these solar plants in a phase-wise manner. In the first phase, it has identified 90 places to install solar panels for high mast lights and streetlights, followed by 500-1000 streetlights in the city areas. The streetlights would not only have an automatic system in getting switched on as soon as darkness descends, but will also get switched-off during the daytime. It would also have a backup capacity for three-days in case of cloudy weather continuing for a longer period. The rooftop solar plant design is primarily for consuming power and supplying excess to the grid.

Many advantages for BMC from using rooftop solar plant

The tapping of solar energy will reduce the dependency of the municipal corporation on a conventional source of power supply. At the same time, it will also reduce its electricity expenses. Rooftop solar energy is much economical than other sources of energy generation. In fact, the payback period of solar rooftop plants is 5 years. Thereafter BMC will be consuming the energy for free for the rest of the life of the solar power plants.

Further, the use of solar energy will result in a more reliable source of power supply for it.
